In this internet centric age, it's gotten to be such that if you don't have a website, you might as well not exist, whether you're a resume service business or just a private citizen. If you're tired of not existing, you might take it upon yourself to create your own website. If that's the case, one of the books you'll probably come across when you're doing your research is Web Design for Dummies by Lisa Lopuck. What's it about?

Web Design for Dummies is an entry in the Dummies series which attempts to break the process of designing a web site down into tasks that an amateur can understand and complete. The book covers designing the navigation structure, creating and incorporating graphics, using HTML, Java and other programming languages, and how to turn web design into a career. It even includes a CD-ROM that offers you some online counseling and examples if the screenshots included in the text aren't enough.

Who should read it?

Web Design for Dummies is a great book for anyone who is considering a career in web design but hasn't done any training yet, as it gives an overview of the profession. It's also a good choice for a Windsor real estate agent who wants to learn how to design his own website. The book doesn't help with creativity and marketing though, so if you're trying to find your web niche this isn't the right book for you. Web experts will also not find much benefit to owning this text.

Web Design for Dummies has been in print since 2001. You can probably pick up a copy at the used bookstore for a few dollars to keep at your PEI cottage for rent. However technology has changed a lot since then, so the 2nd Edition, which dates from 2006, is probably a better choice. Who is Lisa Lopuck anyway?

Lisa Lopuck isn't some Johnny-come-lately who up until a few years ago was driving a Mississauga airport limo. She's been working with computers since 1998. She has worked for Apple, Skywalker Ranch, and eBay designing educational programs. Since 1996 she has had a successful web design business, which has made websites for companies such as 20th Century Fox, Microsoft, and National Geographic. Her work has won numerous awards, including Yahoo!'s Best of the Year.
